Soil Moisture An easy way to test the moisture of your soil is to pull back the mulch close to your plant and examine the soil two to three inches deep. If the soil is sticky, cool, wet or moist you can probably postpone watering that area. When watering, your goal should be to soak the soil as deep as the root system, three inches to two feet depending on the plant.
Existing trees should be watered twice weekly until late fall, and soil moisture should be checked often during drought situations. Shrubs Established
shrubs should be watered every week in drought situations. You should avoid light
sprinkling with your perennials, as this will encourage shallow root
systems Lawns Newly sodded lawns should receive one inch per week until the root system weaves into the soil. After it is established, 1/2 inch should be efficient through the growing season. |
