Plants are Alive!
Protect your investment and water wisely.  Valley Landscaping will properly water the trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals we plant on the day of installation.  To ensure the health and happiness of your plants, a water schedule should begin immediately.  Follow these guidelines and you should enjoy your green investment for years to come.

Soil Moisture
We strongly suggest all trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals be mulched at a depth of three inches.  This will help the soil moisture and insulate the root system of your plants.

An easy way to test the moisture of your soil is to pull back the mulch close to your plant and examine the soil two to three inches deep.  If the soil is sticky, cool, wet or moist you can probably postpone watering that area.

When watering, your goal should be to soak the soil as deep as the root system,  three inches to two feet depending on the plant.

Trees
Newly planted trees should be watered at least once a week until late fall.  Use a soaker hose or a slow running hose until the entire root zone is moist.

Existing trees should be watered twice weekly until late fall, and soil moisture should be checked often during drought situations.

Shrubs
Newly planted shrubs should be watered twice weekly until late fall, and soil moisture should be checked often during drought situations.

Established shrubs should be watered every week in drought situations.

Perennials
Perennials and annuals have smaller and shallower root systems.  Their soil moisture must be checked frequently and should be watered several times a week after initial planting and once a week for established plants.

You should avoid light sprinkling with your perennials, as this will encourage shallow root systems

Lawns
Newly seeded lawns should be watered daily for the first four weeks to moisten the top two inches of soil.  Overhead sprinklers work well and should be moved to cover the entire area.  If possible the new lawn should receive the equivalent of two inches of rain per week.  This can be measured by placing a rain gauge in the sprinklers fall pattern monitoring the time it takes to catch the desired amount.  After four weeks the lawn should receive one inch per week during the active growing season.

Newly sodded lawns should receive one inch per week until the root system weaves into the soil.  After it is established, 1/2 inch should be efficient through the growing season.
